Meditation for racing thoughts

A meditation for racing thoughts does not try to stop the thoughts. It gives the mind one small place to rest instead: the feeling of one hand resting lightly on the other. Each time the mind wanders, and it will, you return to that single point of contact. You do not have to feel peaceful to rest for a moment. You can be here as you are. The practice below is nine and a half minutes of that.

Why fighting the thoughts makes them faster

Racing thoughts speed up when you argue with them. Every attempt to stop thinking is another thought, and now the mind is running two tracks: the original worry and the project of silencing it. The way out is sideways. Give attention something small and physical to hold, and let the thoughts run in the background without an audience.

The hands are good for this. They are always available, they have temperature and weight, and the contact between them is simple enough that the mind can rest on it without effort.

What helps, in order

  1. Get comfortable. Notice the places where your body meets whatever is holding you. Eyes closed if that feels right.
  2. Notice the breath coming and going. No changing it.
  3. Bring attention to the hands. Their temperature. Rest one hand lightly over the other and feel the contact between them.
  4. Stay with that point. When the mind wanders, return to the feeling of the hands. Not as a correction. As a place to come back to.
  5. Let it be imperfect. You do not have to feel peaceful to rest for a moment.

A practice with nothing to do

Guided practice · 9:30

A Soft Place to Land A warm voice, a little sound, and room to settle. Nothing to do for a while. Press play

This works sitting in a chair at three in the afternoon as well as lying in bed at three in the morning. The voice is warm and there is very little of it; most of the nine minutes is sound and room. If the thoughts are loud, that is fine. The hands are still there.

When racing thoughts are a sleep problem

If the racing happens mostly at night, the thing to change is the whole descent into sleep, not one moment of it. The Deep Sleep program is seven sessions built to take the nervous system down toward sleep, for people who lie awake because the body never got the message that the day is over. For a lighter first step, Still Enough to Listen is nine quiet minutes with your heartbeat.

Questions people ask

How do I stop racing thoughts?

Not by stopping them, which adds another thought to the pile. Give attention one small physical thing to rest on, such as the feeling of one hand on the other, and return to it each time the mind wanders. The thoughts slow when they lose their audience.

What is the best meditation for racing thoughts at night?

One with very few words and nothing to achieve. A Soft Place to Land, on this page, is made for that. If racing thoughts are keeping you up most nights, a sleep-specific program like Deep Sleep addresses the whole wind-down rather than one moment.

Why does my mind race when I try to relax?

Because relaxing removes the activity that was keeping the thoughts in the background. Nothing is going wrong. Giving the mind a simple point of contact, like the hands, lets the thoughts run without you following them.
